The 25th, Saturday was a big day. We started in Springfield at the County Fair Grounds. The grounds were very beautiful and this is just one of the buildings that are typical. |
We attended the NHRA car show held at the fair grounds. Here, one of the vendors was able to measure a vehicle's horsepower. This truck is being measured. It produced about 250hp, which was not very high compared to some of the other cars measured. |

How about the world's fastest lawnmower. Check out our time in El Reno Oklahoma. This one goes over 80mph. |
This car was just on display and was not tested on the dyno but I asked the owner about hp and he told me that it produced about 1200hp. |

This is a typical overview of the show. You can tell that there was a lot going on. |
This was just one of hundreds of cool, neat, well done street rods at this show. I took a picture of this one because I love the model T, I like the track T front end and I am a sucker for yellow. |
|
Another one of the vendors sold mufflers and this is how they could show you what each different muffler would sound like. They had this running engine on a stand and could just change the mufflers by slipping them on the exhaust. |

In the afternoon, we packed up and moved to Lincoln for the balloon festival. It was started by the Army parachute team flying the colors. |
The next group out of the plane flew as a team and performed several manuvers before landing.

Watching them land was really quite exciting. |
Here they are packing up the equipment getting ready for the next jump. |

There were many different things to do. If mommy gave you about $50 you could take a quick helicopter ride. This chopper flew all day and into the night. |
About 5:30pm, the balloons started to assemble. This was the first one to attempt to launch although the wind did not go down until about 6:30pm. |

Here is another balloon being inflated. |
They lay the envelope of the balloon on the ground and then begin inflating with large fans. Once the balloon has air in it, they begin to heat the air with the burner system. Most of these balloons hold about 100,000 cubic feet of air and the burners put out heat in the tens of millions of btu's. |

As they inflate, you keep heating and get in and let go. You now are flying. |
You would not want to deliver the mail in a hot air balloon as you often have little say in where you go. Here they are driffing off over the horizon. Don't worry they come back later.
|
|
In the evening, they brought the balloons back, inflated them on the ground and then did the "glow". This is when on the count of three, they all turn on the burners at the same time. The fire lights up the envelopes the same way a chinese lantern lights up. It is very beautiful and alot of fun. |
The next morning, the balloons launched several miles away and flew back to the airfield in the attempt to hit a target with a beanbag. But that is a story for another day. See August 26th for those pictures which will be up by the end of the 26th. |
