Sullivan - "Gateway to the Ozarks"

Founded by Stephen and Dorcas Sullivan in 1856, the City of Sullivan has a history rich in tradition and generosity, offering a proud heritage for all citizens of the Sullivan area. The Sullivans had been in Potosi only a few days when they met Daniel Boone, who was in town purchasing supplies and ammunition. Boone told them of the Meramec River with its clear flowing water, abounding in fish, and the surrounding country rich in game and lead ore. When Daniel Boone and his two Indian friends returned to Boone Creek, Mr. Sullivan and his wife accompanied them to the Meramec River. They settled there and built a cabin near what is known as Hamilton Ford.

When the railroad finally reached the small settlement in 1858, a town was laid out that the railroad company appropriately named "Sullivan." People began migrating to the smaller river lands of the Meramec and Bourbeuse Rivers, making land entries, clearing timber, building homes and cultivating the soil. Along with the farmers came the miners, exploring the mineral resources of the new frontier and starting mining operations wherever they deemed profitable. Iron and copper were the chief resources, although in later years Missouri would rank number one in lead production in the United States.

As a rural community, Sullivan developed steadily and maintained a strong, diversified economy. The International Shoe Company, now Meramec Industries, introduced the City to its first large-scale industry in 1921. Other manufacturing plants and retail businesses continued to appear and expand in Sullivan, adding to the steadily growing economy. From 1920 to 1960 the population grew from 900 to more than 4,000, making Sullivan then the second-fastest growing city in the state. The introduction of the Pea Ridge Iron Ore Company in the 1950's propelled the area population to a regional market place. With the City's current estimated population of 6.613, the future looks just as prosperous.

Places of interest in Sullivan include Major General William S. Harney Summer Home. Known as the "Harney Mansion", this historic home stands on South Mansion Street, and is owned by a private organization devoted to its preservation. Be sure to visit the magnificent Fisher Cave in Meramec State Park where you will use hand-held lanterns as they did long ago.

A portion of the original Route 66, including a historic bridge across the Meramec River, runs through Route 66 State Park. To drive Route 66 during its heyday was to experience both large cities and small towns in rural America.. Many people have fond memories of childhood vacations along Route 66. Bring your family along Old Route 66 once again to build new ones at Sullivan, Missouri, the "Gateway to the Ozarks."
